On May 15th, 2025, Professor Andrea Malizia represented the University of Rome Tor Vergata at the prestigious event “The EU CBRN Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellence Initiative – 10th International Meeting of the National Focal Points”, held in the iconic Egmont Palace in Brussels, Belgium.
Prof. Malizia delivered a scientific presentation titled:
“Enhancing CBRNe Security through Artificial Intelligence: Detection, Simulation, and Decision-Making.”
The research was conducted in collaboration with:
Luca Martellucci, Alessandro Puleio, Riccardo Rossi, Alba Iannotti, Riccardo Quaranta, Colomba Russo, Daniele Di Giovanni, Grace P. Xerri, Gabriele Giuga, Sabrina Rao, and Pasquale Gaudio.
The presentation explored how artificial intelligence can support early detection of hazardous events, simulate the spread and impact of chemical and radiological threats, and assist decision-makers during emergencies involving CBRNe agents. The study highlighted the value of combining AI with open-source modeling tools to strengthen preparedness and protection strategies in high-risk environments.
This important contribution was shared in front of an audience of over 200 CBRN experts, including representatives from the 63 Partner Countries that make up the EU CBRN Centres of Excellence Network, working across 8 regions globally to promote international cooperation and make the world a safer place through CBRN risk mitigation.
The participation of Prof. Malizia marked another milestone in the contribution of the University of Rome Tor Vergata to this strategic EU initiative. In particular, the presence of the International Master Courses in Protection against CBRNe Events, developed in partnership with the European Commission and various international institutions, reinforces the university’s role as a center of academic excellence and global collaboration in the field of CBRNe security.
