🔬 Abstract:

Background and Aim:

The Ebola virus (EBOV) remains a serious concern for global public health due to its high lethality and ease of transmission. In addition to its natural outbreak potential, EBOV presents a possible risk as a biological weapon (BW) in the context of bioterrorism.

Methods:

This work utilized a scoping review methodology following the PRISMA-ScR framework. A literature search was conducted on PubMed, Web of Science, and JSTOR covering the period 2010–2025. Thematic analysis using NVivo 14 allowed identification of protocols, gaps, and relevant case studies.

Results:

The study examined the consequences of EBOV use in a bioterrorist context, highlighting vulnerabilities within healthcare systems and potential socio-economic fallout. It introduces the CBRNe (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and explosive) approach as a comprehensive framework for managing such high-impact threats. This interdisciplinary strategy integrates early detection, risk mitigation, international collaboration, biosecurity measures, specialized training, and real-time monitoring technologies to enhance resilience and preparedness.

Conclusions:

Preliminary findings suggest that the CBRNe approach offers a significantly improved structure for emergency response in healthcare scenarios. The study also emphasizes the vital role of international cooperation and sustained investment in research to counter the intentional misuse of Ebola virus and similar agents.
