Successful Completion of the Biological Risk Module at the University of Rome Tor Vergata

Dear colleagues,

From June 16 to 20, 2025, the University of Rome Tor Vergata proudly hosted an intensive and multidisciplinary Biological Risk Module as part of its Second Level Master CBRNe in Protection against CBRNe events. This high-level program brought together leading experts from national and international institutions, delivering both theoretical insight and hands-on experiences to students and professionals.

The module opened with a comprehensive “Introduction to the Biological Risk”, led by Dr. Nicola Simone from the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, who also addressed crucial themes such as biowarfare, bioterrorism, and biocrimes, and delivered an in-depth historical overview on the use of biological agents.

Parallel to the theoretical lectures, a dynamic Biological Tabletop Exercise (Bio TTX) was conducted under the expert coordination of Dr. Michael Ian Thornton (HESAR) and Dr. Alba Iannotti (University of Rome Tor Vergata), providing participants with the opportunity to analyze operational response to biological emergencies.

Throughout the second level of the module (June 18–20), participants explored advanced topics such as:

  • Viruses, Toxins and Fungi: lectures held by Dr. Gian Marco Ludovici (ThermoFisher Scientific)

  • Bio-Mobile Laboratory Operations: presented by Dr. Edoardo Cavalieri d’Oro from the Italian Firefighters Corps

  • Dispersion and Diffusion of Biological Agents: discussed by Prof. Jean Luc Galà from the University of Louvain

  • Identification Techniques and Instrumentation: demonstrated by Dr. Chiara Agrillo (Italian Firefighters Corps)

  • The Narcosis Project: jointly presented by Prof. Pasquale Gaudio and Dr. Alessandro Puleio (University of Rome Tor Vergata), which included a live demonstration showcasing innovative tools and methodologies for biological agent detection

  • Case Studies and Lessons Learned (2000–2020): analyzed by Col. (Rtd) Stoffer Stienstra of the Royal Dutch Navy

  • The Role of Medical Intelligence in CBRN (MEDINT): presented by Maj. Federico Baldassi (Medical Intelligence, Italian Ministry of Defence)

We extend our sincere gratitude to all the esteemed speakers for their exceptional contributions, and to all the participants for their enthusiasm and professionalism throughout the week.

This module once again confirmed the University of Rome Tor Vergata’s commitment to advancing CBRNe education by combining scientific excellence, operational experience, and international cooperation.
