New Paper on Norovirus Kawasaki Variant and Emergency Hospital Management Using a CBRNe Approach

A new scientific article has been published in Problems of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases (National Center of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases, Sofia, Volume 53, Number 2/2025), focusing on emergency management strategies in hospitals against the emerging Norovirus Kawasaki variant.

The study, entitled “Infections and Norovirus Kawasaki Variant: A Review on Emergency Management in Hospitals”, is authored by:

  • Gian Marco Ludovici, Department of Biomedicine and Prevention, University of Rome Tor Vergata

  • Paola Amelia Tassi, International Master Courses in Protection Against CBRNe Events, University of Rome Tor Vergata

  • Alba Iannotti, Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Rome Tor Vergata

  • Colomba Russo, Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Rome Tor Vergata

  • Riccardo Quaranta, National Institute for Nuclear Physics - INFN-LNF, Frascati

  • Andrea Malizia, Department of Biomedicine and Prevention, University of Rome Tor Vergata

The article addresses the growing concern of nosocomial infections (HAIs), with particular focus on nosocomial enteritis linked to the highly infectious Norovirus genotype GII.17, known as the Kawasaki variant. Since late 2024, this variant has caused a surge in gastroenteritis cases across the UK and Europe, raising alarms due to its potential to overwhelm hospital systems when combined with seasonal influenza surges.

The authors highlight how the integration of CBRNe methodologies—traditionally applied in large-scale emergencies—can enhance hospital preparedness, improve surveillance systems, and mitigate chain reactions of healthcare-associated infections during epidemic surges.

Congratulations to Principal Investigator Dr. Gian Marco Ludovici and the co-authors for this important contribution to both infectious disease management and CBRNe research.
