Enhancing Competences in Radiation Protection: A Novel Risk Assessment Methodology Presented at ERPW 2025

During the European Radiation Protection Week 2025 held in London, Prof. Andrea Malizia presented the work “Enhancing Talent Competences in Radiation Protection and RN Emergency Management through a Novel Risk Assessment Methodology within the SPARKUP Framework”.

This research, developed in collaboration with Alba Iannotti, Colomba Russo, Riccardo Quaranta and Pasquale Gaudio, introduces a new risk assessment methodology aimed at strengthening the preparedness, resilience, and response capacities of professionals in the field of radiological and nuclear (RN) emergency management.

The contribution was part of the Parallel Session 12 – Emergency Preparedness, Resilience and Response (EPRR) frameworks, governance and stakeholder involvement, highlighting the integration of innovative risk evaluation models into training and operational planning.

The study is framed within the Horizon Europe project #SPARKUP (Strengthening CBRNE Talent Development and Cross-Sector Innovation for a Safer Future), which seeks to build sustainable capacities and enhance the employability of R&I talents in Europe.

By focusing on a structured methodology that accounts for threats, vulnerabilities, and exposures across different infrastructures and scenarios, the proposed approach provides a valuable tool to anticipate risks and design more resilient protective measures.
