CBRNe Master Students Complete Intensive Training Week in the Netherlands

As part of the International Master Courses in Protection against CBRNe Events of the University of Rome Tor Vergata, the students of the First and Second Level Programs participated in a specialized training week in the Netherlands, dedicated to deepening operational, medical, and institutional aspects of CBRNe response.

Throughout the week, the students had the unique opportunity to visit and train at the Defence Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service and the Dutch Defence CBRN Centre, thanks to the exceptional support and coordination of Mr. Igor Van Drunen, Officer of the Dutch Armed Forces.

The training continued with an educational and practical session on Civil Medical Aspects of CBRNe at the Gelre Hospital – Emergency Department in Apeldoorn, where participants explored the medical management of CBRNe incidents, emergency procedures, and healthcare system preparedness. A special thanks goes to Ms. Elfriede Thiessen for her commitment to CBRNe education and training, focusing on Explosive, Medical, and Health-related CBRNe scenarios.

The week concluded with an institutional visit to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague, where students gained insight into the international mechanisms governing chemical disarmament and global security. The University of Rome Tor Vergata and the Master’s Didactic Board express their sincere gratitude to the Italian Permanent Representation to the OPCW and to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) for their invaluable support in enabling this visit.

Once again, the CBRNe Master programs demonstrate their commitment to providing students with hands-on, international experiences that bridge the gap between academia, field operations, and global CBRNe governance.

A heartfelt thank you to all the dedicated staff and professionals involved across the different Dutch centres and institutions — the Defence Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service, the Dutch Defence CBRN Centre, and the Gelre Hospital in Apeldoorn and the OPCW— for their outstanding hospitality, professionalism, and contribution to the success of this training week.
