We are pleased to announce the next online webinar within the training activities of the International Master Courses in Protection against CBRNe Events (First and Second Level Masters) of the University of Rome Tor Vergata.
📅 21 November 2025
🕒 15:00 – 17:30 (CET)
💻 Online Webinar (MS Teams)
Fundamentals of Radiation Protection: Sources, Materials and Strategies
(with insights on Radiation Protection in the Case of Neutron Sources)
🎙️ Speaker:
Prof. Giovanni Romanelli
Associate Professor of Applied Physics – Department of Physics, University of Rome Tor Vergata
Affiliated with the NAST Centre
Visiting Scientist, ISIS Neutron and Muon Source (UK)
Abstract
The lecture will explore the types of radiation and their interaction with matter, including ionizing radiation from both a regulatory and physical-chemical perspective.
Topics will include dose and dose rate, and their relationship with biological radiation effects; the concept of cross section as a measure of interaction probability; and penetration of radiation in materials.
Participants will be introduced to online libraries for cross-section and attenuation data, and to practical approaches for handling radioactive sources through control of time, distance, and protective equipment.
The session will conclude with a focus on artificial radioactivity, neutron activation, production, moderation, and shielding of neutron sources, with examples of suitable materials and strategies for effective radiation protection.
About the Speaker
Prof. Giovanni Romanelli is an experimental physicist specializing in applied and condensed matter physics, with a strong background in nuclear physics.
His research includes neutron cross-section measurement and modelling for applications in medical physics, radiation protection, and engineering, as well as the development of epithermal neutron instrumentation for cultural heritage studies.
He also investigates hydrogen absorption and catalysis in porous materials for sustainable transport.
He is Associate Professor of Applied Physics at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, affiliated with the Interdepartmental NAST Centre, and Visiting Scientist at the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source (UK).
