The CBRNe community continues to advance knowledge and preparedness through innovative scientific contributions addressing the challenges posed by Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNE) incidents.
We are pleased to highlight the publication of the review article:
“Decision Pathway for Early Hospital Response to CBRNE Incidents”
Authored by Gian Marco Ludovici, Paola A. Tassi, Luca Cusimano, Francesco D’Agostino, and Andrea Malizia, the paper has been published in the inaugural issue of Acute Frontiers Journal of Emergency and Intelligent Care (2026, Vol. 1, Issue 1).
The article proposes a comprehensive hospital-centered operational framework designed to support healthcare facilities during the critical early phases of CBRNE emergencies. Recognizing the complexity of these incidents, the authors focus on key elements such as early hazard recognition, protected patient flow, contamination control, command-and-control structures, logistics management, and the continuity of essential clinical activities.
The proposed framework integrates preparedness, response, recovery, lessons learned, and continuous improvement into a single decision-making pathway, helping healthcare institutions improve resilience, protect healthcare workers and patients, and reduce the risk of secondary contamination during high-consequence incidents.
This publication represents an important contribution to the growing body of knowledge supporting hospital preparedness and emergency management in CBRNE scenarios.
We would like to extend our sincere congratulations and thanks to Dr. Gian Marco Ludovici, Principal Investigator of the study, and to all co-authors for their valuable contribution to strengthening CBRNE preparedness and healthcare resilience.
